A DEEPLY RELAXING THERAPY WITH LASTING BENEFITS
Indian Head Massage, known traditionally as Champissage, is a time-honoured healing practice that has been passed down through generations in India. It focuses on the head, neck, shoulders, and upper arms—areas where we often hold stress and tension—and offers a deeply rejuvenating experience for both body and mind.
What Is Indian Head Massage?
Indian Head Massage is a holistic therapy rooted in Ayurvedic principles, designed to balance the body’s energies and promote wellbeing. This treatment works not only on a physical level—relieving tension and improving circulation—but also energetically, helping to clear blockages in the body's subtle energy pathways.
One unique and modern form of this treatment is Malish, a specialised version of Indian Head Massage that was introduced to the UK by Kush Kumar, a respected holistic therapist and author. His interpretation blends ancient techniques with modern understanding, making the therapy accessible and impactful for today’s lifestyles. 'Malish' means 'massage' in several South Asian languages and reflects a nurturing, rhythmic treatment style.
What to Expect During a Treatment
A typical Indian Head Massage session lasts between 25 to 45 minutes and can be performed with the client seated and fully clothed, making it ideal for those seeking a quick yet effective relaxation experience.
During the session, the therapist uses a variety of techniques including:
* Gentle kneading and compression movements
* Rhythmic tapping
* Pressure-point stimulation
* Soothing strokes and hair-pulling to stimulate circulation
The massage starts at the upper back and shoulders, moves to the neck and scalp, and often ends with a calming facial massage. Depending on the practitioner, warm oils such as coconut or sesame may be used for added nourishment and relaxation—but this is optional.
Many people report entering a meditative, dream-like state during the treatment—a welcome escape from the mental noise of daily life.

Helen started life in media and advertising, eventually navigating to corporate training around Europe. She acquired her training skills through a number of recognised training bodies with her main qualifications coming from CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel Development).
At the same time, she developed an interest in meditation and alternative therapies and the importance of self care - something that normally gets pushed to one side when stressed and constantly on the go. She qualified in various therapies and started to provide treatments.
When she and her husband decided to leave the rat race and form their own company, it was only natural that she wanted to develop her involvement with holistic therapies further to provide training to help others.
Helen has given several radio appearances and published articles on the topic.
She has so far provided standard and tailored training in Reiki, Indian Head Massage and Ear Candling to the public as well as NHS initiatives, Hospices, Care Homes, Charities and the Mental Health, across the UK, for over 20 years.
Besides providing training face to face and online, she also provides a free question and answer service specialising in Reiki. You can contact her by email on helen@reiki-questions.com
