What is Ear Candling?
Ear Candling, also known as thermal-auricular therapy, is a gentle and relaxing treatment that involves placing a specially designed hollow candle just inside the ear canal. As the candle burns, it creates a mild vacuum effect believed to help draw out impurities, relieve sinus pressure, and promote a sense of overall calm and wellbeing.
The treatment is non-invasive and often described as deeply soothing — a sanctuary of stillness in a noisy world.

The History of Ear Candling
The practice of ear candling has ancient roots, with variations found across many cultures. It is believed to have been used by the Hopi Native American tribe, as well as in ancient Egyptian, Chinese, Tibetan, and Greek traditions. These civilisations used the technique as part of spiritual and physical cleansing rituals.
Despite its long history, ear candling has evolved with modern wellness practices and is now used more widely as a holistic therapy for relaxation and possible relief from congestion or ear-related discomfort.

What to Expect During a Treatment
A typical ear candling session lasts around 30 to 45 minutes. Here's what you can expect:
• You’ll lie comfortably on your side, with one ear facing up.
• A practitioner will gently insert the tapered end of the candle into your ear and light the other end.
• The candle is held securely while it burns slowly, producing a soft crackling sound and a warm sensation.
• Once the candle has burned to the appropriate length, it is extinguished safely and removed.
• The process is repeated on the other ear.
• Some treatments include a gentle facial massage or lymphatic drainage around the ears, face, and neck to further enhance relaxation and drainage.
"Many clients return regularly simply for the calming, meditative quality of the treatment itself."
Potential Benefits of Ear Candling
While scientific evidence is mixed and ear candling should not be used as a replacement for medical treatment, many clients report the following benefits:
• Relief from sinus congestion and pressure
• A reduction in ear wax build-up
• Temporary relief from tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
• Easing of headaches or migraines
• Support for lymphatic drainage
• Aiding relaxation and sleep
• A sense of clarity and balance
Many clients return regularly simply for the calming, meditative quality of the treatment itself.

Helen started life in media and advertising, eventually navigating to corporate training around Europe. She acquired her training skills through a number of recognised training bodies with her main qualifications coming from CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel Development).
At the same time, she developed an interest in meditation and alternative therapies and the importance of self care - something that normally gets pushed to one side when stressed and constantly on the go. She qualified in various therapies and started to provide treatments.
When she and her husband decided to leave the rat race and form their own company, it was only natural that she wanted to develop her involvement with holistic therapies further to provide training to help others.
Helen has given several radio appearances and published articles on the topic.
She has so far provided standard and tailored training in Reiki, Indian Head Massage and Ear Candling to the public as well as NHS initiatives, Hospices, Care Homes, Charities and the Mental Health, across the UK, for over 20 years.
Besides providing training face to face and online, she also provides a free question and answer service specialising in Reiki. You can contact her by email on helen@reiki-questions.com
